Smart Home Installation

Lutron Caseta · GE Enbrighten · Nest · Ecobee · Neutral-Wire Retrofits

The electrical side of smart-home integration done right — smart switches and thermostats wired correctly for older Eastern CT housing, neutral-wire pulls when needed, platform-agnostic installs that work with your existing ecosystem.

What's Specific About Smart Home Installs in Eastern CT

Smart switches vs smart bulbs — switches almost always win

Smart bulbs (Philips Hue, LIFX) are great for specific use cases — colored accent lighting, single-fixture remote control without rewiring. But for the common case (whole-house control, family-friendly daily use, reliability), smart switches are the better answer. A Lutron Caseta dimmer ($50-80) controls any LED bulb on that circuit, keeps the wall switch working normally for guests and kids, and doesn't lose connectivity when the dumb wall switch gets turned off by a houseguest.

The neutral-wire problem in older Eastern CT homes

Most modern smart switches require a neutral wire at the switch box. Pre-1980s Eastern CT homes were typically wired without neutrals routed to switch boxes (the neutral terminated at the fixture, not the switch). Smart switches that explicitly support "no neutral required" exist (Lutron Caseta and some GE Enbrighten models) but their feature set is more limited. If you want full smart-switch functionality in an older home, the install includes pulling a neutral wire to each switch box — adds $50-$150 per switch in retrofit cost.

Platform decisions — Lutron vs GE/Enbrighten vs Wi-Fi

Three common platforms: (1) Lutron Caseta — RF-based, needs a Caseta hub, premium reliability, dimmer compatibility is excellent, ~$50-80 per switch + $80 hub. (2) GE Enbrighten / Z-Wave — works with SmartThings/Hubitat/Home Assistant hubs, ~$40-60 per switch + $60-150 hub. (3) Wi-Fi switches (Kasa, Wyze, etc.) — no hub needed but every device is on your Wi-Fi network, reliability varies, ~$15-40 per switch. We help spec the platform during the walk-through based on your existing smart-home ecosystem.

Nest and Ecobee thermostat installs

Both Nest (Google) and Ecobee thermostats require a C-wire (common wire) at the thermostat for continuous power. Many older Eastern CT homes were wired with only 4 wires (R, W, Y, G) and no C — meaning the thermostat doesn't have continuous power and the smart features either don't work or steal power from other circuits (causing HVAC reliability issues). A proper install includes pulling a 5-wire thermostat cable from the air handler to the thermostat location. We do this as part of the smart-thermostat install.

Smart Home Installation FAQ

How much does smart home installation cost in Eastern CT?+

Highly project-dependent. Single smart-thermostat install (Nest or Ecobee, including C-wire pull if needed) runs $250-$500. Whole-house smart-switch retrofit (10-15 switches + hub) runs $1,500-$3,500. Smart-lighting controls + smart-thermostat + a couple of smart outlets in a typical Eastern CT home: $2,000-$4,500. We quote a project after a walk-through showing what you want and what your existing wiring supports.

Do I need a separate hub for smart switches?+

Depends on the platform. Lutron Caseta requires a hub ($80). Most Z-Wave systems (GE Enbrighten and similar) require a hub like SmartThings, Hubitat, or Home Assistant ($60-$150 device or DIY on a Raspberry Pi). Wi-Fi-direct switches (Kasa, Wyze, some Lutron) don't need a separate hub. The hub approach is more reliable but adds upfront cost; the Wi-Fi approach is simpler but every device is one more thing on your home network.

My older house doesn't have a neutral wire at the switch box. Can I still use smart switches?+

Yes — Lutron Caseta and a few GE Enbrighten models support "no neutral required" operation. The trade-off is feature set: no neutral switches typically can't do certain advanced functions (some scene controls, certain LED-load minimums). For full functionality, the right answer is pulling a neutral wire to the switch box during the install — adds $50-$150 per switch in retrofit work but unlocks the full feature set.

Can you make my Alexa control my lights and thermostat?+

Yes. We install switches and thermostats that integrate with Alexa (and Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings). We handle the wiring side — the device integration is platform-specific and we walk you through pairing during commissioning. Voice control works after the install is done and the devices are paired.

What about smart outlets?+

Same general approach as smart switches — best done as in-wall replacements rather than plug-in adapters. Most smart outlet models cost $30-$60 each; install is straightforward if the wiring is modern. Common use cases: lamps controlled by automation routines, plug-load monitoring on always-on devices, holiday-lights scheduling.

Will my smart home install work if my Wi-Fi goes down?+

Depends on the platform. Hub-based systems (Caseta, Z-Wave with SmartThings/Hubitat/HA running locally) continue to work locally without internet — automations run, switches still work via the app on local Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi-direct systems depend on the cloud and may stop responding when internet is out (though the wall switches always still work as normal switches). For reliability, hub-based local-first platforms are stronger.
