Do older homes near Ellington Center need a panel upgrade?

Often yes. Many pre-1920 houses along Main Street and Maple Street still run 60-100 amp service, fuse boxes, or Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels that no longer meet load or safety code. We upgrade these to a permitted, inspected 200 amp panel that can carry modern HVAC, EV charging, and finished-basement loads.

How quickly can a TJF electrician reach my Ellington home?

We work out of Tolland County and cover Ellington daily, including Ellington Center, Crystal Lake, Sadds Mill, and the Route 83 corridor. Most Ellington service calls get same-day or next-day scheduling, and our 24/7 emergency line answers nights, weekends, and holidays with no after-hours upcharge.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Ellington, CT?

Yes. Panel upgrades, new circuits, generators, and EV chargers require a Town of Ellington electrical permit and a final inspection. As CT-licensed electricians (license E1-0209943) we pull the permit, schedule the inspector, and handle Eversource coordination so the job is signed off correctly.

Is my Ellington home a good fit for a standby generator or EV charger?

The newer Sadds Mill and Pinney Hill subdivisions east of Route 286 are ideal for Level 2 EV chargers and whole-home Generac standby generators, and Connecticut ice-storm outages make backup power a common Ellington request. We size the generator or charger to your existing panel and tell you up front if a service upgrade is needed.

Every electrical service we offer, linked from this Ellington page. The card grids above prioritize the work types most commonly requested by Ellington customers; the catalog below ensures every service we run is one click away.

What's Different About Wiring an Ellington Home

Ellington isn't one town electrically — it's a lake community, a village center, and a stretch of working farmland, and each corner throws its own kind of job at us. Here's what an Ellington electrician actually runs into on the truck.

Crystal Lake cottages built for summer, lived in year-round

A lot of the housing ringing Crystal Lake on the east side of Ellington started life as seasonal camps and cottages, then got winterized and lived in full-time. That combination — original summer-cabin wiring now carrying electric heat, a well pump, a hot tub, and a mini-split — is exactly where we find undersized services, ungrounded two-prong circuits, and panels that never got upsized when the place became a year-round home. Bringing a lake cottage up to a permitted 200 amp service is one of our most common Ellington jobs.

Farm properties and barns off Somers Road and Route 140

The rural north end of Ellington, out along Somers Road and Route 140, is still working farmland — and barns, outbuildings, and detached garages there almost always need a dedicated subpanel rather than a tangle of extension cords run from the house. We size and permit barn and outbuilding subpanels, feed them properly underground or overhead, and add the dedicated circuits a farm property actually uses: well pumps, shop tools, freezers, and livestock-water heaters that can't be allowed to fail in a January cold snap.

Older Ellington farmhouse wiring near the Center

The pre-1920 farmhouses in and around Ellington Center still turn up knob-and-tube, cloth-sheathed branch wiring, and fuse-box or Federal Pacific Stab-Lok services. CT home insurers increasingly refuse to renew a policy over that kind of wiring, so a lot of our Ellington Center work is the insurance-driven combination job: replace the failing panel and rewire the specific circuits the inspector and the carrier flag, all on one Town of Ellington permit.

Well pumps and storm exposure on the tree-lined roads

Much of Ellington outside the Center is on private well rather than town water, which means a correctly sized 240V well-pump circuit — and a generator transfer switch that keeps that pump running — isn't a luxury here, it's how the household gets water during an outage. The heavily tree-lined stretches along Route 83 and Route 140 take real limb-fall damage to overhead service drops in Connecticut ice storms, which is why whole-home standby generator quotes spike in Ellington every time the forecast turns.
