Whole-Home Rewiring

Pre-1970 housing · K&T + aluminum + cloth retrofit cleanup · Single permit

Most Eastern CT homes built before 1970 carry 4-5 generations of layered wiring. We untangle it to a clean, code-compliant, single-permit state — usually without tearing the plaster apart.

What's Specific About Whole-Home Rewiring in Eastern CT

When a home needs a full rewire vs targeted repair

Whole-home rewiring is appropriate when multiple problems compound: active knob-and-tube circuits, aluminum branch wiring, ungrounded two-prong outlets, undersized 60A or 100A service, no AFCI protection on bedroom circuits, and layered retrofits from successive owners. If only one or two issues are present (e.g. just an outdated panel, or just a single problem circuit), a targeted repair is usually the better path.

Eastern CT's layered-retrofit problem

Many Eastern CT homes built between 1880 and 1960 carry electrical histories spanning 4-5 generations of wiring technology: original knob-and-tube in the attic, 1950s cloth-jacketed cable in renovated rooms, 1970s aluminum branch wiring in additions, 1990s NM-B romex in finished basements, and modern AFCI-protected circuits in the kitchen renovation. Untangling that layered retrofit to a single-permit, single-inspection state is its own specialty.

Minimum-impact routing through finished homes

A common misconception is that whole-home rewiring requires tearing the plaster apart. In practice, we route the majority of new homeruns through attic-and-basement chases, fish through existing wall cavities with minimal opening, and reuse old wiring routes (and sometimes the old gas-lighting pipe routes in Federal-era homes) wherever possible. Surface raceway is a last resort used in finished basements and unfinished portions of attics, not in main living spaces.

Phased rewires for occupied homes

Most customers stay in the house during a whole-home rewire. We work room-by-room or zone-by-zone, energizing each new circuit as it comes online before de-energizing the corresponding old circuit. The actual whole-house outage is limited to the panel-cutover step (typically 4-6 hours during a single day). Bedrooms, kitchen, and refrigeration loads are sequenced to minimize disruption.

Whole-Home Rewiring FAQ

How much does a whole-home rewire cost in Eastern CT?+

Full whole-home rewires run $12,000-$30,000+ depending on house size (sq ft + room count), finish state (plaster is harder than drywall), accessibility (knee walls, insulated attics, finished basements add cost), and whether the panel and service are being upgraded at the same time. Partial rewires (one floor, or specific circuits) run $4,000-$12,000. We quote a written scope and price after a free walk-through.

How long does a whole-home rewire take?+

Most Eastern CT whole-home rewires run 2-4 weeks of working time, depending on house size and complexity. We typically work 4 days a week with the inspector schedule, so total calendar time is often 3-5 weeks from start to final inspection.

Do I need to move out?+

Usually no. We phase the work room-by-room and keep the rest of the house energized. There's a single 4-6 hour whole-house outage for the panel cutover. Some customers prefer to be out during that specific day; most stay in the house throughout the project.

What gets included — just the wiring, or outlets/switches/devices too?+

A full rewire includes new wire runs, new outlet and switch boxes, new outlets and switches (white plastic standard; upgrades available), AFCI/GFCI breakers per code, and a new panel if needed. Existing light fixtures get reconnected to the new wiring. Customer-supplied premium devices (e.g. smart switches, decora-style outlets in colors) get installed at the same labor rate as standard.

How is this different from just upgrading the panel?+

A panel-only upgrade replaces the breaker box and service-side hardware but leaves the existing branch wiring in place. A whole-home rewire replaces the actual wire running through your walls. The panel upgrade is appropriate when the branch wiring is sound (post-1965 romex, modern grounded circuits); the whole-home rewire is appropriate when the branch wiring itself is the problem (K&T, aluminum, ungrounded).

Will my homeowner's insurance pay for it?+

Standard policies generally don't cover preventative rewiring — but if the existing wiring has caused damage (fire, water from related issues), claim coverage often applies. We'll work directly with your adjuster if a claim is involved. For non-claim rewires triggered by underwriter renewal requirements, the carrier expects you to pay.

What Customers Say

Tyler knocked it out of the park. Rewired my bedroom outlets and everything looks pro, no flickering, no weird hums. Then he installed a bathroom exhaust fan that actually pulls air, not just looks pretty. Dude’s polite, fast, and charges fair. Would hire him again tomorrow. Ten out of ten
